Thumbprint is dedicated to simplifying the commercial furniture design and specification process through best-in-class technology.
We believe technology is most powerful when it helps people create big solutions to big problems.
A very special thank you to our pilot manufactures!
Thumbprint started as a sketch on a piece of trace paper. I just wanted a streamlined way to pull a spec package together for my clients. Why was it so hard to price typicals quickly? Why did lead times always need to be verified one by one? What would it take to create a platform that centralized this information so that I could get out of the weeds and back to solving my client’sproblems?
The sketches became wireframes that would later serve as the initial concept of the user experience. I talked about this concept, an end-to-end platform that took you through the entire furniture specification journey, with anyone that would listen.
Now, thumbprint is a venture-funded tech startup headquartered in Falls Church, VA. The team has grown, pilot manufacturers have onboarded and the first build of the platform is ready for testing.
The vision of thumbprint has always been to create furniture-centric software that reflected the way furniture packages are actually designed, specified and managed. Our goal is to bring the most satisfying specification experience to the furniture community and power it with the best technology possible. We hope you find joy in the design process. We hope thumbprint can help make that joy possible.
- Katherine D’Zmura Friedman
We wanted to make furniture-centric software that reflected the way furniture packages are actually designed, specified and managed. We took interiority into consideration so our users could make both global and local changes to the furniture package. Most importantly, we wanted to automate the most tedious aspects of specification to create more bandwidth for the creative, people-centric aspects of the furniture process.
We are launching the first, full version of the platform this June at NeoCon/Design Days. See you in Chicago!
Yes and yes! We currently have over two dozen more manufacturers in the pipeline and are starting conversations with many more. As their data goes through the standardization process, they will go live on the platform. Please continue to stay tuned for updates. We absolutely want to know which manufacturers are top of mind for you. Please email your suggestions to: hello@thumbprintfurniture.com
We are currently in discussions with many of them and are optimistic they will join the platform. It’s possible you will see some of their open line, satellite brands on the platform first.
Email hello@thumbprintfurniture.com and we can schedule a kickoff meeting to review data requirements and the onboarding process. Many aspects of the initial onboarding process have been automated. The initial data collection and staging in the databases takes 2-4 weeks and the subsequent data processing takes 3-6 months, depending on data and catalog complexity. Our team does this processing work and will keep you updated along the way.
Thumbprint is a win-win-win solution for designers, dealers and manufacturers/reps. Each group can design, specify and manage furniture packages on the platform and work independently or as a project team. Additionally, Thumbprint can be used by the commercial real estate community for accurate interior test fits.
A beta is an exclusive first look at our cutting-edge technology. It's the first test run and an opportunity to work out the kinks. Feedback is very important during this time and an opportunity for us to make the best possible version for you. There will be exclusive benefits to early users, including free trials.
We are leveraging AI and machine learning models, among other powerful technologies on this platform. By training on a set of well-annotated commercial floor plans, we built machine learning models to read an image of a floor plan and detect key features needed to proceed with drawing furniture layouts, including doors, windows, rooms, and millwork. Additionally, we use a series of heuristics-based approaches and optimization algorithms to find walking paths, recognize areas where furniture can be placed, and place real furniture items while taking into account budget, lead times, style, and optimizing for space usage.
The purpose of the beta is to test the core end-to-end features of the platform–this includes uploading an image file of a floor plan, editing and programming that floor plan, and generating layouts. We will be releasing updates throughout the beta. If there are specific features you would love to see, please let us know!
We are reimagining project documents, including the Bill of Materials. During the first phase of beta testing, project documentation will not be available as it will be undergoing testing. However, during the beta window, a full suite of project documents will go live and you will be notified when this occurs. Our big goal is to add functionality to budgets so that it is easy to analyze pricing from different angles: by manufacturer, by space, by item type etc.
Not at this time. We are laser-focused on bringing a best-in-class experience to the design and specification process!
Not at this time. However, we are actively exploring this and would love your feedback.
Yes! Training videos and enterprise training will be available.
We have tested on a variety of floor plans up to a file size of 2.5 MB. As part of testing, please feel free to upload floor plans of any size. However, very large floor plan files could cause an error. We developed the first version of Thumbprint to satisfy a broad spectrum of use cases such as commercial, multifamily, and general applications. Post-launch we will be developing vertical-specific solutions for education, healthcare, and government.
Our algorithms have appropriately sized walking paths and door swing clearances built in so furniture is only placed in appropriate areas. Algorithms are never perfect and it is important that users verify building elements, furniture placement, and other essential spatial considerations at every step of the journey. Additionally, it is important to verify site conditions and field measurements prior to order entry.
On typicals that include power, specifications default to manufacturer recommendations. However, you can always go in and specify alternate power and wire management configurations if you would like.
During the first phase of beta testing, lead time data is not available. However, during the beta window, lead time information will become available for each manufacturer. Our lead times include the manufacturer’s production lead time for that specific item plus a 2-week buffer for transit and receiving.
Yes! We are currently working on the ability to upload a vector PDF, which we expect to go live during beta. In the future, we will explore uploading CAD-based files and explore direct compatibility with Revit.
Thumbprint will have a monthly and annual subscription rate for individuals and enterprises. Test users will have special incentives, including a free trial, to thank them for their efforts. Additionally, the feedback we receive from testers will directly inform what features we build next. Your priorities are our priorities!
Yes! Our testers will receive a free trial period prior to launch. Please stay tuned for details!
No. All data will be password protected and not accessible by other users.
We intend to play well with others and our ethos is to have an open source mentality. Integrations will be an important part of our ecosystem so you can eventually expect import/export functionality.
We will be providing easy ways to submit feedback as you are experiencing the platform. The main avenue for feedback will be a virtual one-on-one feedback session. You can also expect surveys to be issued periodically via email. Finally, if something pops in your head, please know that you can always email hello@thumbprintfurniture.com with your feedback.
Thumbprint is a web-based platform and is therefore highly compatible with a variety of devices and operating systems. Thumbprint is optimized for Chrome.
